Labeled Bones

β€œThe living bird is not its labeled bones.” - Margaret Atwood, The Blind Assassin

Silhouettes of endangered and extinct animal forms filled with cosmic imagery contemplate the permanence of loss and the preciousness of life on our planet and its singularity in the universe. Acrylic medium is mixed with iridescent and metallic pigments then painted in thin translucent layers within stenciled forms on wood panels. The raised silhouette and translucency create a shimmering appearance reminiscent of stars twinkling at night. Complementing the visible image, an application of phosphorescent pigment creates a second image of constellations and cosmic bodies that only appear in low light.
